Math Consultant
BreakFree Education

BreakFree Education is looking for an experienced math teacher to work with us on a project starting mid-July 2021, and continuing through the 2021-22 school year.

Background on BreakFree Education:

At BreakFree Education, our mission is to radically improve education in the juvenile and adult correctional systems. In pursuit of this goal:

  • We develop quality educational programs that inspire and engage incarcerated and recently released students.

  • We partner directly with juvenile and criminal justice agencies across the country, providing the resources, training, and networks they need to make school relevant and meaningful, so students can build a successful life when they leave.

  • We work in more than 40 states, improving education for more than 25,000 students each year.

The Project:

At BreakFree Education, we support the work of educators working in juvenile and adult correctional facilities around the country.  The Wisconsin Department of Corrections operates the Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake- School facility, located in Irma, Wisconsin.  We have worked closely with the education team at Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake over the last 18 months, with a focus on increasing teacher capacity and comfort using Google Workspace tools to make school more meaningful and engaging for students. That work generally has not been subject matter specific.

Starting this July, we are planning to work with school leadership and the math team at Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake to provide more intentional support around math curriculum and instruction, with a focus on helping them develop the capacity to design lessons that are engaging, relevant and meaningful, that incorporate project based learning, and that align with state standards.  Our specific objective is to build an Algebra 1 curriculum that really works for the students there, which will serve as the foundation of other math courses, as well.

This project will entail:

  • Visiting the site in July, meeting with school leadership and the math instructor(s) along with a BreakFree Education team member; establishing a positive working relationship and mapping a path forward

  • Working with the math team (primarily remotely) in July and early August 2021 to build out the framework for an Algebra 1 course materials--which will include both the year-long curriculum and model, classroom ready instructional materials for a core set of units.

  • Providing ongoing remote support and coaching to the math team over the 2021-22 school year; this support will likely include assistance with lesson design and instructional delivery.

  • Traveling to and offering in-person support to the math team approximately one time in the fall and the spring of the 2021-22 school year.

  • Ensuring that as the 2021-22 school-year winds down that Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake has a fully developed, replicable, and modifiable Algebra 1 curriculum and classroom ready set of instructional materials--developed within Google Workspace.

Skills, Expertise and Experience:

We are looking for an experienced educator who:

  • Has experienced success as a math teacher and instructional coach at the middle and high school level

  • Is highly skilled at developing engaging and relevant curriculum and building teacher ready and student accessible instructional materials

  • Has a design approach that emphasizes project based learning, accessibility for all students, and cultural relevance

  • Has worked with and shown a commitment to supporting students who have struggled in traditional school environments

  • Has highly developed skills with Google Workspace and is comfortable with a range of other digital tools used to make curriculum accessible to students

  • Has strong communication skills, is comfortable working remotely, and is prompt and thorough

  • Lives and works in Wisconsin, and is able to provide both remote support and travel to Lincoln Hills/Copper lake 2 to 4 times during the school year

Timing:

We are looking for a Contract Specialist who is available starting in mid-July, and will be able to offer support throughout the school year.

Compensation:

We plan to contract with an experienced individual or individuals who will work with BreakFree as independent contractors for this project.  We are open to compensating for this work on an hourly basis ($40-$50/hour) or for the project as a whole.
